The Matchup: App State vs. Wofford

How App State Can Win:

For the Mountaineers to be able to come out of their slump and finish the season strong, they are going to have to win the game through the air.
Wofford is dead last in the SoCon in passing defense, while App State is second.

App State should welcome this strategy, being privileged to tout three of the top 10 wide receivers in the SoCon. Andrew Peacock (first), Tony Washington (fourth) and Marcus Cox (seventh) all find themselves on the list.

That doesn’t mean that Marcus Cox shouldn’t have a big game as the No. 3 running back in the SoCon, but Wofford’s claim to fame this season is their defense, which is second in the conference.

How Wofford Can Win:

The Terriers will need to take the exact opposite approach and use their impressive running game to their advantage. Currently, Wofford ranks third in rushing offense and has the second-best running back in the SoCon, Donovan Johnson.

Wofford will need to control the clock if they are going to outlast a high-powered aerial attack from App State.

Their defense is second in points allowed this year and it’s due to their pressure up front. They have to get to the quarterback quickly, because their secondary is their weakness.

The Bottom Line:

App State has a golden opportunity to get a road win and get back on the winning track before their final game in the SoCon.

Finishing .500 in the conference should be the goal and should be achievable, but they’ll need to take it one game at a time and it all starts in Spartanburg, S.C.

A run game against a pass game and clock management versus points-on-the-board, that’ll be the difference for whichever team comes out on top.
